„Flashpoint School Toilet“ – Students demonstrate for better school toilets worldwide

On World Toilet Day, Berlin school students draw attention to the critical sanitation conditions at schools around the world with a mobile self-built school toilet. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, 25% of schools worldwide have no basic sanitation. Hand washing facilities with soap are even missing in half of all schools.

The students’ demonstration ends at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), where the students will deliver their messages to the Parliamentary State Secretary, Norbert Barthle. They demand an expansion of the global commitment to improve the situation and hand over an oversized postcard with the slogan “flashpoint school toilet” to the State Secretary.

To set an example for the topic, the German Toilet Organization (GTO) places a toilet cabin in the front garden of the ministry, where video messages are shown of students from countries strongly affected by this problem. State Secretary Barthle will then meet with representatives of the GTO and the GIZ, a German development agency, for an expert discussion involving the press. The aim is to discuss the transfer and scaling of successful approaches such as the GTO’s “Toiletten machen Schule” taking place in Germany to improve school toilets abroad. Under the title “Toilets making the Grade“, the GTO and the GIZ are currently organising school competitions in Pakistan and Uganda on behalf of the BMZ.

The activity is part of GTO’s development education project “Klobalisierte Welt”.
